Ad hoc trophiesEdit
- Main article: Ad hoc trophy
An ad hoc trophy is a trophy for a Vita game that can only be earned in ad hoc mode (i.e., local multiplayer mode requiring at least two Vitas). Due to the relative unpopularity of the Vita, ad hoc trophies are often extremely difficult to earn, as actually tracking down another player that not only has a Vita near you, but also owns a copy of the same game, is oftentimes impossible.
- Main article: Near
Near was a service and application offered for the Playstation Vita that allowed Vita gamers to interact when in close proximity of each other (within 2km or so). These interactions were typically quite limited, and included things like offering in-game items to each other (but no true multiplayer functionality—local multiplayer is handled via ad hoc play, which is still possible). Near was discontinued on July 31, 2017, making all trophies that relied on it unobtainable.
- Main article: Visual novel
A visual novel is an interactive game that is most popular in Japan, whose primary purpose is to tell a story, typically with branching paths that are explored via player dialog choices. They usually feature static graphics, often using anime-style art or occasionally live-action stills (and sometimes video footage). As the name might suggest, they resemble mixed-media novels, and their gameplay typically consists almost entirely of selecting dialog options from menus. Although there are visual novels on all Sony platforms, they are considerably more common and more popular on the Vita than the PS3 or PS4.
Visual novels often include a "text skip" or "fast-forward" feature that automatically takes the player from dialog choice to dialog choice, cutting out the actual dialog and scenes in between. Because of this, visual novels often have some of the simplest trophy lists that exist, with some that can be platinumed in 30 minutes or less.
